Runner’s World received this official statement from Prof Tim Noakes regarding the recent controversy and outcry about his low carbohydrate, high fat diet. Runner’s World will be publishing a detailed interview with Noakes in the May issue of Runner’s World. Please note that this does not necessarily represent the views of Runner’s World. Here’s what Professor Noakes has to say: Thank you so much for your email inquiring about the low carbohydrate lifestyle that I currently follow and have adopted for life. Last week I received more than 2. I do not have an additional secretary to manage this correspondence, I am unable to answer each letter individually. I have therefore prepared an outline letter which explains why I think that those who, like me, are carbohydrate- resistant (CR) (or pre- diabetic with a family history of diabetes) can improve their health significantly by substantially reducing the amount of carbohydrate that they eat. It may be that many others will benefit from this eating plan but at present I conclude that it is those who are the most CR who will benefit the most. In time I think we will learn that you do not have to have CR to benefit from this eating plan. But I am not prepared to make that conclusion just yet. Although many asked for specific diets, I am reluctant to give such advice. I prefer to give general advice and ask that you please consult a dietician by taking this letter to him or her and asking for help in constructing a healthy eating plan, whilst sticking within the guidelines I suggest. So the first point is that this is not a diet, it is an eating plan for life – it is a life style. If you wish to lose weight and improve your health by changing your eating for a short time only, then this is not the way to go. Once you go down this eating route, you have to stick with it for life. Offers an opportunity selling healthcare products. Are your looks fading? Facelift Without Surgery will make you look considerably younger using acupressure. Do you look in the mirror and see creases and wrinkles. Because if you start eating this way and successfully lose weight, you will regain that weight and more should you go back to eating the way you did before – that is if you go back to eating the food choices that caused the problem in the first place. The point is that if you are like me, your metabolism does not work very well when fed too much carbohydrate. And this is not going to change regardless of how much weight you might lose or even how much exercise you might do. For those of us with CR, our metabolism is the problem and if we want to do the best for our bodies then we have to change FOREVER the nature of the foods that we eat. But I argue that this change is much easier than most would ever believe. Unfortunately it is also the advice that many dieticians will be the least likely to give you. Fish farming Business Plan In Nigeria PDF - Sample template to help you start fish farming business / secure loans. So if you are not ready to make a change that you will continue for the rest of your life, then it is probably best that you do not begin in the first place. For to change you have to rid yourself of an addiction for eating easily assimilated carbohydrates – an addiction that is at least as powerful as those associated with cigarette consumption and some recreational drugs. As you know, it is not easy to give up addictions. And like all addictions, addicts have to take each moment of their recovery one day at a time. In a sense those of us who are unable to metabolize carbohydrates are never cured of that addiction. We are always in recovery. We have to take each new day of our cure, one day at a time. But if, like me, you are convinced that you have a really good reason to change (in my case to avoid dying from diabetes – the fate that struck my father and his brother) and are prepared to change what you eat for the rest of your life, then you may be up for the challenge. Please note also that this is not a fad diet – the reason why it works so well is because there are solid biological reasons why it has to produce a successful outcome if followed properly by those with CR. The second point is that this eating plan requires some discipline to be successful. As I have said, it takes discipline to insure that we do not relapse into our former addiction. Those who really benefit the most are those who have the greatest reason for and desire to change. I changed initially because I did not want to develop diabetes so I had a very good motivation to start. Then I discovered that once I had got rid of the addictive food choices, I felt so good on this eating plan that I would never want to go back to my old eating ways. So now I have two reasons to stay with this eating plan – long- term health and the feelings of a renewed youth. The point is that the greater your reasons to change, the more probable it is that you will be successful. The third point is that the only discipline you require is very simple: You must severely restrict the intake of the following foods. I have found it easiest simply to remove all from my diet. Sugar (Must be completely removed from your diet)All sugary drinks including cola drinks and sweetened fruit juices. Bread. Rice. Pasta. Potatoes. Porridge. Breakfast cereals. Some high energy fruits like bananas. All confectionary – cakes and sweets. Desserts. Artificial sweetners and products containing these products (like “diet” colas)You should also be very wary of so- called “low fat” options, yoghurt especially, since these are laden with sugar and so are less healthy than the full fat options. In fact you need to check all the foods that you eat. You will be astonished in the number that contain hidden sugar. I think that most dieticians would agree that none of the foods listed above is essential for health and some like sugar and other refined carbohydrates are definitely unhealthy. Some dieticians argue that whole grain cereals should be included because they are “healthy” but I have had difficulty finding whole grain cereals that have not been heavily refined. It is also clear that allergies to cereals are commoner than is realized. However, the real point is that if you are CR as am I, one has to make choices of (i) how much carbohydrate one wants to eat each day – I limit myself to about 5. I have chosen to get my 5. Others might make a different choice. As a result, I restrict my food choices to the following food and beverage groups: Eggs. Fish. Meat – organic or grass fed, not processed. Dairy Produce – milk, cheese and yoghurt – all full cream. Vegetables – mainly leafy, low carbohydrate sources. Nuts – macadamia and almonds especially but no peanuts or cashew nuts as these are high in carbohydrates. Fruits – very occasionally and then only those which have a lower carbohydrate content like apples and berries. Water, tea and coffee (all unsweetened!)I also currently supplement my eating with omega- 3 capsules (1. The value of omega- 3 supplementation seems to be universally accepted. I am also experimenting with supplementation of a range of vitamins but this is still a work in progress as is my choice of the best vegetables and salads. I do not believe that I have the final answers and am continually reading the scientific literature and the internet and tweaking my diet. I will continue to modify my eating by studying the literature, eating differently for periods and seeing if I notice any differences in how I feel, in my blood markers and in my running performances. But the basic pattern of avoiding carbohydrates remains intact. Obviously it is stupid to go to the trouble of changing one’s eating plan but continuing to do other behaviors that are unhealthy. So smoking is not allowed and lots of exercise is encouraged – 3. Proper sleep and control of stress are obviously very important as well. My experiment has shown me that I can do any amount of exercise I wish without increasing my carbohydrate intake (I walked for 6 hours on the mountain on Sunday and race up to 2. I am also aware that we are all different and whereas too much carbohydrate and cereal and too little fat and protein in the diet was clearly my problem, there are others who may have trouble with dairy produce or meat and may find it difficult to eat enough of these foodstuffs to replace enough carbohydrate in their diets for there to be a noticeable difference in the way they feel. However, I think that the problem I have – CR – is much more common than is generally acknowledged. So I appreciate that whereas some will not find this eating plan of much help, a much greater majority of people who have always struggled to control their weight when following the conventional “heart healthy” low fat diets, will find their lives altered dramatically as did I when I made the switch. I also think that more people than is currently realized develop minor medical complaints as a result of eating grains, cereals and highly refined carbohydrates and they too will benefit from this change. Indeed, one reason one feels so good on this eating plan may simply be because it removes the currently unrecognized toxic elements found in the highly processed foods that are commonly eaten. There are a number of reasons why I think you should consult a dietician first. If he or she is disinterested in these ideas, then you must keep shopping around until you find someone who is prepared to consider all the evidence. First, we need to inform that profession that we are unhappy with the conventional advice that many continue to give us. If it has not worked for us perhaps it is time for the profession to consider that the traditional “one size fits all” “high carbohydrate, low fat, heart healthy”approach to nutrition is not the best solution for all. Second, we need to make sure that more dieticians are exposed to the evidence for the value of high protein/high fat/low carbohydrate diets. We are approaching a tipping point when the value of this eating plan will become universally acknowledged. The Scandinavian countries – which already have the healthiest people in the world – are rapidly adopting this eating pattern to the extent that Norway has run out of butter! Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)PCOS OVERVIEWPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that causes irregular menstrual periods because monthly ovulation is not occurring and levels of androgens (male hormones) in women are elevated. The condition occurs in approximately 5 to 1.
The elevated androgen levels can sometimes cause excessive facial hair growth, acne, and/or male- pattern scalp hair thinning. Most, but not all, women with PCOS are overweight or obese, and they are at higher- than- average risk of developing diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. For women with PCOS who want to become pregnant, fertility pills or injections are often needed to help women ovulate. Although PCOS is not completely reversible, there are a number of treatments that can reduce or minimize bothersome symptoms. Most women with PCOS are able to lead a normal life without significant complications. Depo-Provera is the brand name of the drug medroxyprogesterone, which is an injection used to prevent pregnancy. A form of this medication may also be used to treat. PCOS CAUSEThe cause of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is not completely understood. It is believed that abnormal levels of the pituitary hormone luteinizing hormone (LH) and high levels of male hormones (androgens) interfere with normal function of the ovaries. To explain how these hormones cause symptoms, it is helpful to understand the normal menstrual cycle. Normal menstrual cycle — The brain (including the pituitary gland), ovaries, and uterus normally follow a sequence of events once per month; this sequence helps to prepare the body for pregnancy. Two hormones, follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) and LH, are made by the pituitary gland. Two other hormones, progesterone and estrogen, are made by the ovaries. During the first half of the cycle, small increases in FSH stimulate the ovary to develop a follicle that contains an egg (oocyte). The follicle produces rising levels of estrogen, which cause the lining of the uterus to thicken and the pituitary to release a very large amount of LH. This midcycle . If the egg is fertilized by a sperm, it develops into an embryo, which travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus. After ovulation, the ovary produces both estrogen and progesterone, which prepare the uterus for possible embryo implantation and pregnancy. Menstrual cycle in PCOS — In women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), multiple small follicles (small cysts 4 to 9 mm in diameter) accumulate in the ovary, hence the term polycystic ovaries. None of these small follicles are capable of growing to a size that would trigger ovulation. As a result, the levels of estrogen, progesterone, LH, and FSH become imbalanced. Androgens are normally produced by the ovaries and the adrenal glands. Examples of androgens include testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and DHEA sulfate (DHEAS). Androgens may become increased in women with PCOS because of the high levels of LH but also because of high levels of insulin that are usually seen with PCOS. Because hormonal changes vary from one woman to another, patients with PCOS may have mild to severe acne, facial hair growth, or scalp hair loss. Menstrual irregularity — If ovulation does not occur, the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) does not uniformly shed and regrow as in a normal menstrual cycle. Instead, the endometrium becomes thicker and may shed irregularly, which can result in heavy and/or prolonged bleeding. Irregular or absent menstrual periods can increase a woman's risk of endometrial overgrowth (called endometrial hyperplasia) or even endometrial cancer. Women with PCOS usually have fewer than six to eight menstrual periods per year. Some women have normal cycles during puberty, which may become irregular if the woman becomes overweight. Weight gain and obesity — PCOS is associated with gradual weight gain and obesity in approximately one- half of women. For some women with PCOS, obesity develops at the time of puberty. Hair growth and acne — Male- pattern hair growth (hirsutism) may be seen on the upper lip, chin, neck, sideburn area, chest, upper or lower abdomen, upper arm, and inner thigh. Acne is a skin condition that causes oily skin and blockages in hair follicles. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by specialized cells within the pancreas; insulin regulates blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels rise (after eating, for example), these cells produce insulin to help the body use glucose for energy. Excess production of insulin is called hyperinsulinemia. Among women with PCOS, up to 3. I couldnt agree more ive been on depo on and off since 2010 and the first two shots were ok then i dec that in jan 2015 to try it one more time and i just got off it.The risk of these conditions is much higher in women with PCOS compared with women without PCOS. A family history of diabetes, overweight and obesity, as well as race and ethnicity (particularly African American and Hispanic), can increase the likelihood of developing diabetes among women with PCOS. Infertility — Many women with PCOS do not ovulate regularly, and it may take these women longer to become pregnant. An infertility evaluation is often recommended after 6 to 1. It is not known for sure if women with PCOS are at increased risk for this condition. Both weight loss and treatment of insulin abnormalities can decrease this risk. Other treatments (eg, cholesterol- lowering medications, treatments for high blood pressure) may also be recommended. Patients with this problem often experience fatigue and daytime sleepiness. In addition, there is evidence that people with untreated sleep apnea have an increased risk of insulin resistance, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or stroke. Sleep apnea may occur in up to 5. PCOS. The condition can be diagnosed with a sleep study, and several treatments are available. You may be diagnosed with PCOS based upon your symptoms, blood tests, and a physical examination. Expert groups have determined that a woman must have two out of three of the following to be diagnosed with PCOS. The evidence can be based upon signs (excess hair growth, acne, or male- pattern balding) or blood tests (high androgen levels). Blood tests for pregnancy, prolactin level, thyroid- stimulating hormone (TSH), and follicle- stimulating hormone (FSH) may be recommended. Insulin levels are not used to diagnose PCOS, partly because insulin levels are high in people who are above normal body weight and because there is no level of insulin that is . An oral glucose tolerance test is the best way to diagnose prediabetes and/or diabetes. A fasting glucose level is often normal even when prediabetes or diabetes is present. Many clinicians who treat PCOS patients also recommend screening for sleep apnea with questionnaires or overnight sleep studies in a sleep laboratory. In women with moderate to severe hirsutism (excess hair growth), blood tests for testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) may be recommended. All women who are diagnosed with PCOS should be monitored by a health care provider over time. Symptoms of PCOS may seem minor and annoying, and treatment may seem unnecessary. However, untreated PCOS can increase a woman's risk of other health problems over time. PCOS TREATMENTSOral contraceptives — Oral contraceptives (OCs; with combined estrogen and progestin) are the most commonly used treatment for regulating menstrual periods in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). OCs protect the woman from endometrial (uterine) hyperplasia or cancer by inducing a monthly menstrual period. OCs are also effective for treating hirsutism and acne. A skin patch and vaginal ring are also available for contraception. Some women choose intrauterine devices (IUDs) containing a type of progesterone to minimize uterine bleeding and protect against uterine cancer. However, unlike OCs, patch, and ring, the IUD is not effective for treating acne or facial hair. Women with PCOS occasionally ovulate, and OCs are useful in providing protection from pregnancy. Although an OC allows for bleeding once per month, this does not mean that the PCOS is . These treatments can be used in combination to reduce and slow hair growth. OCs and antiandrogens can also reduce acne. Other prescription skin treatments (eg, medicated lotions) or oral antibiotics may be recommended in some cases. If a woman has not had a period for six weeks or longer, the clinician may first prescribe a hormone (sample brand name: Provera) to induce a menstrual period. Side effects — Some women who take birth control pills (not just those with PCOS) stop having monthly bleeding or develop irregular spotting and bleeding. Irregular bleeding usually resolves after a few menstrual cycles. Many women worry that they will gain weight on the pill. This is not a concern with the currently available low- dose pills. Some women develop nausea, breast tenderness, and bloating after beginning the pill, but these symptoms usually resolve after two or three months. The pill is safe and effective, although it slightly increases the risk of blood clots in the legs or lungs; this is a rare complication in young, healthy women who do not smoke, but it is more of a concern in women who are obese and in older women. This will induce a period in almost all women with PCOS, but it does not help with the cosmetic concerns (hirsutism and acne) and does not prevent pregnancy. It does reduce the risk of uterine cancer. Hair treatments — Excess hair growth on the face and/or other parts of the body can be removed by shaving or use of depilatories, electrolysis, or laser therapy. Many women worry that these treatments cause hair to grow faster, although this is not true. The first step is to prescribe an estrogen- progestin contraceptive (ie, a birth control pill). If, after six months of hormone treatment, sufficient improvement in excess hair growth has not been achieved, a second medication called spironolactone, an antiandrogen, is added. If hormone treatment with an estrogen- progestin results in a satisfactory reduction in excess hair growth, this therapy is continued. Scalp hair loss can be treated with medications in some situations. Other options include hair replacement and wigs. How I Used The Raw Vegan Diet to Beat Cancer Naturally Before I get into the details of the raw vegan diet, it’s important to understand that our bodies are complex biological machines, and the food we eat is the fuel. Our bodies are brilliantly designed by God to convert all types of food substances into fuel and energy to sustain life. When you eat, you break down food with your teeth into liquid form, digestive juices break that liquid down further in your stomach, then the nutrients are absorbed into your blood stream and carried to your cells. Your body uses these nutrients for energy, and to repair and regenerate cells. The fiber, which is too large to be absorbed into your bloodstream, moves through your intestinal tract and out of your body. Are Humans Frugivores? Humans are frugivores, a fact that might not surprise you if you've experienced the great pleasure of biting into a perfectly sweet, juicy. Waste byproducts, dead and mutated cells, and toxins are carried away in your bloodstream and lymphatic system to be eliminated via sweat, mucus, urine, feces, etc. Fiber is like an intestinal broom. It picks up toxins deposited in your gut and carries them out. The best source of clean high quality fuel for your body comes from raw organic fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts. This is food designed by God for us, His creation, to eat. But we’ve gotten away from that. Thanks to technological innovations and modern conveniences, the majority of the food we now eat in America is “processed”. It is not natural and it is not healthy. Processed food is junk food. Most of us think of junk food as soft drinks, candy, snacks, fast food, and tv dinners.
But in reality junk food is almost any food that has been altered by man and packaged for resale. The best nutrition advice I’ve ever heard is this: “If man made it, don’t eat it.” – Jack Lalane. The food industry is a multi- billion dollar industry and it’s very competitive. Major food producers are constantly looking at ways to lower costs, increase profits, and lengthen the shelf life of their products. As a result of this process, the nutritional value in the food they produce is decimated or destroyed. Processed food is loaded with artificial ingredients created in laboratories that we were never intended to ingest: chemical additives like artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners to make it look and taste good. Raw kidney beans at a level as low as 1% of diet can cause death in rats in two weeks. Beans cooked at 100°C (212°F) for 30 minutes, and incorporated at a level as. How to Get Enough Protein on a Raw Food Diet. The raw food diet has its origins in the late 19th century, but has become increasingly popular in recent decades. Chemical preservatives are added to make it last longer on the shelf. And finally synthetic vitamins and minerals are added, in an attempt to restore the nutritional value destroyed by all the processing. Look at the ingredients on the labels of the food in your pantry. If the label has ingredients you have never heard of, or cannot pronounce, beware. I don’t care what the nutritional value on the label claims. No processed food product can match the nutritional value of vitamins and minerals contained in raw organic fruits vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Just because the FDA approved these additives for human consumption, and they don’t make you sick immediately after you eat them, doesn’t mean they are healthy. And just because an artificial ingredient doesn’t cause any noticeable effects on a lab, rat doesn’t mean it’s ok for you to eat. There’s no way the FDA can test the long- term effects that all these artificial ingredients combined have on the human body over a lifetime, because every body is different, and we are all eating different combinations of these artificial substances everyday. Unhealthy diet and lifestyle are proven causes of cancer and many other diseases. Couple that with the fact that we live in a toxic world and we’re constantly bombarded with invisible toxins that we can’t see or avoid, and the problem is compounded. Which is why it’s increasingly more important now to limit the amount of toxins we put into our body via the food we consume and products we use. The bottom line is their bottom line. The commercial food industry exists to make money and they don’t care about your health. They care about selling you something to eat, and they are constantly looking at ways to cut costs by substituting cheaper artificial ingredients for real ones. High fructose corn syrup is cheaper than natural cane sugar; and artificial strawberry flavoring is much less expensive than using real strawberries. The cheaper the ingredients, the more profit for the company. Unfortunately the result is processed food with negative nutritional value loaded with sugar, salt, and artificial colors, flavors and preservatives that are toxic to you. There is an eye- opening documentary about the commercial food industry that you need to see immediately. This movie will change the way you think about food forever. I recommend buying a copy (or three) because you’ll want to show it to everyone you know.“Why Raw?”Simply put, cooking destroys enzymes, lessens the nutritional value of food, and raises its acidity. Whether you’re in a lab or in the kitchen, subjecting any object to high heat causes a chemical reaction in that object that changes its structure. Cooking can convert nutrients from an organic to an inorganic state and render them useless to your body. Raw food is living food. Cooked food is dead. The more raw food you can incorporate into your diet, the better. The single best book on raw foods and juicing I’ve ever read is called. God’s Way To Ultimate Health. If you have any kind of chronic illness or disease, read it immediately. If you compare commercial and organic produce in your local grocery you will likely find that the commercial produce looks much better; but don’t be fooled. They have mastered the science of growing “beautiful” produce. However, organically grown produce tastes better, is chemical free, and often has higher nutrient content. You can read about the cleanest and dirtiest fruits and vegetables HERE.“I eat whatever I want. I eat junk food and fast food all the time and I feel fine, so what’s the problem.”I did too and I got cancer. Your body was not designed to process these artificial ingredients. Simply put, it just doesn’t know what to do with them. Some artificial substances pass through your body, but others are trapped in your kidneys, liver, intestines, and tissues like your heart, blood vessels, and brain. If you have ever been in a cave and seen stalagmites, you may remember from school that they are mineral deposits formed over many years. The same types of deposits form in your body when you ingest substances it cannot break down or eliminate. These Inorganic Materials lead to hardened and clogged arteries, kidney stones, gall stones, etc. Over time they can build up and block blood flow to the brain leading to brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. Bioavailability is a measurement of whether or not a nutrient is in a state that can be absorbed and used by your body. Take spinach for example. The iron you get from raw spinach is in an organic state and absorbable by your body. Most of the fish consumed today is not caught in the wild. Don’t be fooled when the restaurant menu says “Atlantic Salmon” This does not mean it was caught in the Atlantic Ocean. If you look closely at the packaging in the grocery store, you will see the phrase “color added” in very fine print. Because of the factors I’ve already mentioned, meat and dairy are acid- forming. I was 1. 00% raw vegan for 9. From then on I was 8. This is a major part of what I did to beat cancer along with not doing chemo. I know cutting out processed food is not easy, because it means giving up foods you enjoy. Believe me, your life and and health is worth it. Published. 0. 0: 0. BST, 2. 1 July 2. So you can drop that tricky half stone just in time for the holiday season. With the summer holidays upon us, there’s no escape: the time has come for the annual bikini face- off. The battle of the bulge. Can you do it? Could you perhaps lose a little weight before you have to climb into what is effectively your bra and knickers to wear to the beach in front of your nearest, your dearest and dozens of complete strangers? In truth, we probably all could. I remember year on year, trying on swimsuits and sarongs and wraps, wondering whether a tankini would cover a multitude of sins (it won’t). But don’t despair. Even if you’ve put it off to the last moment, there’s still plenty that can be done to get a body in shape for the big reveal. Many people will have already heard about The Fast Diet, the book I co- wrote with Dr Michael Mosley just seven months ago. Since New Year, the diet has been the talk of the town and an instant bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic. Thousands of people (including Miranda Kerr, Benedict Cumberbatch, Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall, the cast of Corrie, the news desk at the BBC) have started to live by its simple and appealing 5: 2 message; a message so easy to remember that it’s almost a mantra: slash your calories to a quarter of your usual intake (5. It’s a reassuringly clear method – no faddish feeding, no elimination of food groups, no serial deprivation to make your heart sink – which means there’s good reason to believe that this is the only diet you’ll ever stick to. For many, it has proved to be a fairly swift and straightforward way to lose weight. In keeping with government guidelines, the Fast Diet should achieve a loss of between 1lb and 2lb a week. So, if you can muster the willpower and stick to the plan, you could easily be half a stone down by the time you’re in the queue for passport control – and that’s exactly the half a stone that so many of us haul around like an overstuffed beach bag most of the time. While the rules are simplicity itself, it does help to have a few aces up your sleeve. It may test you, but it won’t kill you. As far as Fast Day food goes, aim to eat Mostly Plants and Protein. That’s the best way to factor bulk and staying power into your day. Lots of leafy veg will do the trick – a salad can be impressive without tipping over the calorie quota – while lean protein (eggs are a brilliant starting point) will help to keep you satiated.'The brilliant thing about the Fast Diet. The recipes here are all riffs on this basic idea. And while the portions are necessarily limited, they’ll never feel mean. Each one has been carefully assessed for calorie count and content by nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker, and I’ve tried to maintain maximum flavour throughout – the O’Kelly fish, for instance, feels like a substantial summer meal, easy to prep, full of taste, texture and colour. Instead of the usual beefburger barbecues, try my turkey burgers with a spiky tomato salsa: all the interest (more, I would argue) for a fraction of the calories. Any of the recipes included here can be modified for non- fasting family members – just add crusty bread or potato salad and let them have the tiramisu for pud. You can have a bit of it tomorrow. Plenty of people I encounter mention that summer is the ideal season to embark on the Fast Diet – not only because a body has nowhere to hide once the temperatures soar, but also because light eating suits the heat. I’d have a hard time dealing with a dumpling or a cottage pie at this time of year, so it makes sense to capitalise on the mood. Go for grilled fish with a generous herby salad, dressed with lemon and scattered with cumin seeds. Or try the Greek salad on page 4. Only your bikini will tell. How it all started. He was told by his doctor that he needed to start medication. But keen to find a non- pharmaceutical way to change his fate, he interviewed scientists engaged in research into intermittent fasting. This leads to elevated levels of hormones such as insulin which can cause metabolic changes in the body. The problem arises when they dominate all the time – this can bring an increased risk of developing a range of diseases including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Cutting back on calories, by contrast, reduces insulin levels and gives your system a chance to rid itself of old and worn- out cells – a bit like taking your car into the garage for an occasional repair; doing so will almost certainly ensure that it goes on running in peak condition for longer. The importance of fat loss versus weight loss. What people sometimes forget in their obsession with . Not all fat, however, is bad. Fat on the thighs and buttocks appears to be less of a health risk than excess belly fat, known as visceral fat. Visceral fat significantly increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, which is why you should aim to have a waist that is less than half your height. While losing fat, you want to preserve as much muscle as possible. Muscle is metabolically active; in other words, if you take two people who are the same weight, but one is muscular and the other fat, then the muscular one is not only likely to be healthier but will also burn more calories. People with more muscle have a better chance of keeping weight off. You can help preserve muscle by maintaining, or better still increasing, the amount you exercise. This could simply mean walking more and always taking the stairs, or more vigorous activities such as weight training. No problem. As many successful fasters now know. Of course. the whole idea of the Fast Diet is to give your body an occasional break. Some people will. For others this will prove too challenging. One of the great problems with crash diets is that although some of the weight loss will be fat, much of it will be muscle (on a conventional diet you lose around 7. When you regain the weight, as most people inevitably do, it is almost all fat. The human trials that have been done so far suggest that intermittent fasting is unusual in that the weight loss appears to be almost all visceral fat from around the gut. Studies involving overweight volunteers doing alternate- day fasting found that when individuals were asked to eat a quarter of their normal calories one day, then eat whatever they liked the next, they lost significant amounts of weight and saw substantial improvements in their cholesterol and blood sugars. A surprising finding was that people, when allowed to feast, did not do so. This is borne out by anecdotal evidence too: many people on the Fast Diet don’t feel ravenous the following day. Their appetite and attitude to food change, and healthier eating seems to become part of their everyday life. On this regime Michael lost 1. I followed Michael’s lead and in four months lost 2. Intermittent fasting really is, as Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall says, starting to look like a . From a psychological point of view, its indisputable attraction is that calorie restriction is limited to two days a week, leaving the rest of the time blissfully free of worry. Ten snacks slim people keep in the fridge or store cupboard. Air- popped popcorn. Hard- boiled eggs Half- fat hummus. Non- starchy veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, radishes, cherry tomatoes, celery, cucumber, mushrooms, sugar snaps, mangetouts)Feta, cottage cheese and low- fat mozzarella. Alternatively, use a silicone brush to apply oil to the pan and dab away excess with kitchen paper. To stop ingredients sticking, add a little water rather than a slug of oil. Boiling or poaching eggs means you are not adding any Fast Day calories. Cooking meat and poultry with its skin on will maximise flavour and prevent drying out, but don’t eat the skin. Much of the fat lies there. Roast meat on a rack over a baking pan to allow excess fat to drip away. Similarly, a griddle pan channels fat into the grooves and away from your plate. Whenever possible, cook meat and fish on a barbecue – it’s your fat- free summer stand- by. Scrub vegetables rather than peeling them, as many nutrients are found close to the skin. Eating the skins will add fibre to your diet. Steam vegetables instead of boiling them; that way their nutrients are more likely to remain intact. Gravitate towards clear vegetable broths, which are lower in calories than chowders, bisques and cream soups. Veg stock generally has a lower fat content than chicken stock. If you’re not adding fat, you do need to add flavour, such as chilli flakes, cumin, star anise, cloves, a squeeze of lemon, handfuls of fresh herbs. Fast track to a bikini body. Before you start. If you are on medication, see your doctor before embarking on any fast. There are certain groups for whom fasting is not advised. Type 1 diabetics are included in this list, along with anyone suffering from an eating disorder. If you are already extremely lean, do not fast. Children should never fast, so this is a plan for over–1. Pregnant women should eat according to government guidelines and not limit their daily calorie intake. Some people on the Fast Diet experience headaches or constipation, particularly at first; these can generally be alleviated by drinking calorie- free fluids and eating fibre- rich foods. The question of carbs. If you constantly consume sugary, carbohydrate- rich food (and drinks), your body copes by producing increasing amounts of insulin. If you’re out and ordering a sub, get the 6- inch sandwich. Buy a small popcorn, a small salad, a small hamburger. Again, studies find we tend to eat what’s in front of us, even though we’d feel just as full on less. Eat water- rich foods and you’ll eat fewer calories overall. A body of research out of Pennsylvania State University finds that eating water- rich foods such as zucchini, tomatoes, and cucumbers during meals reduces your overall calorie consumption. Other water- rich foods include soups and salads. You won’t get the same benefits by just drinking your water, though. Because the body processes hunger and thirst through different mechanisms, it simply doesn’t register a sense of fullness with water (or soda, tea, coffee, or juice). Bulk up your meals with veggies. You can eat twice as much pasta salad loaded with veggies like broccoli, carrots, and tomatoes for the same calories as a pasta salad sporting just mayonnaise. Same goes for stir- fries, omelets, and other veggie- friendly dishes. If you eat a 1: 1 ratio of grains to veggies, the high- fiber veggies will help satisfy your hunger before you overeat the grains. Bonus: Fiber is highly beneficial for preventing constipation, which can make you look bloated. Avoid white foods. There is some scientific legitimacy to today’s lower- carb diets: Large amounts of simple carbohydrates from white flour and added sugar can wreak havoc on your blood sugar and lead to weight gain. While avoiding sugar, white rice, and white flour, however, you should eat plenty of whole- grain breads and brown rice. One Harvard study of 7. Switch to ordinary coffee. Fancy coffee drinks from trendy coffee joints often pack several hundred calories, thanks to whole milk, whipped cream, sugar, and sugary syrups. A cup of regular coffee with skim milk has just a small fraction of those calories. And when brewed with good beans, it tastes just as great. You can also try nonfat powdered milk in coffee. You’ll get the nutritional benefits of skim milk, which is high in calcium and low in calories. And, because the water has been removed, powdered milk doesn’t dilute the coffee the way skim milk does. If you’re going to indulge, choose fat- releasing foods. PATENT EXPIRY DATES 1/3 « New Drug Approvals. The global generic pharmaceuticals market is likely to witness strong growth in the next few years owing to the patent expiration of key blockbuster drugs and the judicious cost containment efforts of governments and healthcare service providers worldwide. At the same time, the balance in terms of healthcare expenditure and sales revenue is poised to shift from developed to emerging markets such as India, China, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and South Korea, as huge potential still remains untapped in these countries. Popular drugs scheduled to lose U. S. A strong skills requirement for these new inventions is a positive move for some sectors. A swift move in to emerging markets like Brazil, India and China and alternative business models means a more dynamic global recruitment drive and a greater effort to match skills, new locations and business management as quickly as possible. Niche products – including so- called orphan drugs – are attractive but leave these larger companies looking at a loss if they can’t convince their local regulatory body that a branded version is more commercially viable than the generic alternative. So is it the generic drug development projects that will see the biggest impact on Life Science recruitment in the next 1. Or will it be established . The patent expiration of blockbuster drug fuel the growth of global generic drug pharmaceutical market. Many branded pharmaceutical companies drugs expired in last few years like Lipitor, Cozaar, Concerta,Crestor, Levaquin and Zyprexa. Market leaders such as Teva, Sandoz and Mylan are increasingly focused on generics, as this segment provides a competitive edge and presents huge profit margins. Patent expiration opens the door for generic versions which make the healthcare available to the consumers at cheaper costs as compared to the patented drugs. Other risk factors include intestinal malabsorption and dialysis. Humans and certain other animals require vitamin C in their diets to make the building blocks for collagen. Diagnosis is typically based on physical signs, X- rays, and improvement after treatment. Sources of vitamin C in the diet include citrus fruit and a number of vegetables such as tomatoes and potatoes. Cooking often decreases vitamin C in foods. It occurs more often in the developing world in association with malnutrition. It took another 4. British Navy began giving out lemon juice routinely. Even earlier might be a pain in a section of the gums which interferes with digestion. After 1–3 months, patients develop shortness of breath and bone pain. Myalgias may occur because of reduced carnitine production. Other symptoms include skin changes with roughness, easy bruising and petechiae, gum disease, loosening of teeth, poor wound healing, and emotional changes (which may appear before any physical changes). Dry mouth and dry eyes similar to Sj. In the late stages, jaundice, generalized edema, oliguria, neuropathy, fever, convulsions, and eventual death are frequently seen. In modern Western societies, scurvy is rarely present in adults, although infants and elderly people are affected. Human breast milk contains sufficient vitamin C, if the mother has an adequate intake. Scurvy is one of the accompanying diseases of malnutrition (other such micronutrient deficiencies are beriberi or pellagra) and thus is still widespread in areas of the world depending on external food aid. In the synthesis of collagen, ascorbic acid is required as a cofactor for prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase. These two enzymes are responsible for the hydroxylation of the proline and lysine amino acids in collagen. Hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine are important for stabilizing collagen by cross- linking the propeptides in collagen. Defective collagen fibrillogenesis impairs wound healing. Collagen is an important part of bone, so bone formation is affected. Defective connective tissue leads to fragile capillaries, resulting in abnormal bleeding. Untreated scurvy is invariably fatal. Other sources rich in vitamin C are fruits such as lemons, oranges, papaya, and strawberries. It is also found in vegetables, such as brussels sprouts, cabbage, potatoes, and spinach. Some fruits and vegetables not high in vitamin C may be pickled in lemon juice, which is high in vitamin C. Though redundant in the presence of a balanced diet. Fresh meat from animals which make their own vitamin C (which most animals do) contains enough vitamin C to prevent scurvy, and even partly treat it. In some cases (notably French soldiers eating fresh horse meat), it was discovered that meat alone, even partly cooked meat, could alleviate scurvy. Conversely, in other cases, a meat- only diet could cause scurvy. In the 1. 49. 7 expedition of Vasco de Gama, the curative effects of citrus fruit were already known. Lawrence River, used the local natives' knowledge to save his men who were dying of scurvy. He boiled the needles of the arbor vitae tree (Eastern White Cedar) to make a tea that was later shown to contain 5. C per 1. 00 grams. He repeated the experience of mariners that the cure for scurvy was fresh food or, if not available, oranges, lemons, limes, and tamarinds. Ebot Mitchell, discovered in a house in Hasfield, Gloucestershire, contains a . In fact, Lind himself never actively promoted lemon juice as a single . He shared medical opinion at the time that scurvy had multiple causes – notably hard work, bad water, and the consumption of salt meat in a damp atmosphere which inhibited healthful perspiration and normal excretion - and therefore required multiple solutions. Unfortunately this process destroyed the vitamin C and was unsuccessful. During the 1. 8th century, disease killed more British sailors than enemy action. Hiatal hernia is a condition that produces one or more of the following symptoms: Pain/discomfort behind the breast bone (sternum), usually towards the bottom of the. It was mainly by scurvy that George Anson, in his celebrated voyage of 1. Literature championing the cause of citrus juice, therefore, had no practical impact. Medical theory was based on the assumption that scurvy was a disease of internal putrefaction brought on by faulty digestion caused by the hardships of life at sea and the naval diet. Although this basic idea was given different emphases by successive theorists, the remedies they advocated (and which the navy accepted) amounted to little more than the consumption of . Advocated by Dr David Mc. Bride and Sir John Pringle, Surgeon General of the Army and later President of the Royal Society, this idea was that scurvy was the result of a lack of . In contact with air the copper formed compounds that prevented the absorption of vitamins by the intestines. Malaspina's medical officer, Pedro Gonz. Only one outbreak occurred, during a 5. Five sailors came down with symptoms, one seriously. After three days at Guam all five were healthy again. Spain's large empire and many ports of call made it easier to acquire fresh fruit. Within the Royal Navy, however, opinion - strengthened by first- hand experience of the use of lemon juice at the siege of Gibraltar and during Admiral Rodney's expedition to the Caribbean - had become increasingly convinced of its efficacy. This was reinforced by the writings of experts like Gilbert Blane. But the first initiative came not from the medical establishment but from the admirals. Ordered to lead an expedition against Mauritius, Rear Admiral Gardner was uninterested in the wort, malt and elixir of vitriol which were still being issued to ships of the Royal Navy, and demanded that he be supplied with lemons, to counteract scurvy on the voyage. Members of the Sick and Hurt Board, recently augmented by two practical naval surgeons, supported the request, and the Admiralty ordered that it be done. There was, however, a last minute change of plan. The expedition against Mauritius was cancelled. On 2 May 1. 79. 4, only HMS Suffolk and two sloops under Commodore Peter Rainier sailed for the east with an outward bound convoy, but the warships were fully supplied with lemon juice and the sugar with which it had to be mixed. Then in March 1. 79. Suffolk had arrived in India after a four- month voyage without a trace of scurvy and with a crew that was healthier than when it set out. The effect was immediate. Fleet commanders clamoured also to be supplied with lemon juice, and by June the Admiralty acknowledged the groundswell of demand in the navy had agreed to a proposal from the Sick and Hurt Board that lemon juice and sugar should in future be issued as a daily ration to the crews of all warships. This led to a remarkable health improvement among the sailors and consequently played a critical role in gaining the advantage in naval battles against enemies who had yet to introduce the measures. The meat was cooked but was freshly obtained from young horses bought from Arabs, and was nevertheless effective. This helped to start the 1. France. The Merchant Shipping Act of 1. Royal Navy and Merchant Navy to provide a daily lime ration to sailors to prevent scurvy. Its very bitter taste was usually disguised with herbs and spices; however, this did not prevent scurvygrass drinks and sandwiches from becoming a popular fad in the UK until the middle of the nineteenth century, when citrus fruits became more readily available. It was the acid, not the (then- unknown) Vitamin C that was believed to cure scurvy. In fact, the West Indian limes were significantly lower in Vitamin C than the previous lemons and further were not served fresh but rather as lime juice, which had been exposed to light and air, and piped through copper tubing, all of which significantly reduced the Vitamin C. Indeed, a 1. 91. 8 animal experiment using representative samples of the Navy and Merchant Marine's lime juice showed that it had virtually no antiscorbutic power at all. For example, the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1. Adrien de Gerlache, initially discouraged his men from eating penguin and seal meat. In the Royal Navy's Arctic expeditions in the 1. Navy expeditions continued to be plagued by scurvy even while fresh (not jerked or tinned) meat was well known as a practical antiscorbutic among civilian whalers and explorers in the Arctic. Even cooking fresh meat did not entirely destroy its antiscorbutic properties, especially as many cooking methods failed to bring all the meat to high temperature. The confusion is attributed to a number of factors. While pasteurization killed bacteria, it also destroyed vitamin C. This was eventually resolved by supplementing with onion juice or cooked potatoes. Axel Holst and Theodor Fr. They fed guinea pigs their test diet of grains and flour, which had earlier produced beriberi in their pigeons, and were surprised when classic scurvy resulted instead. This was a serendipitous choice of animal. Until that time, scurvy had not been observed in any organism apart from humans and had been considered an exclusively human disease.
